Rarely shows aggression. Prefers to hide in water when threatened. In the Middle Ages considered a fasting animal due to its tail. Castoreum used as remedy for headaches and cramps. Hide valued in Europe for warmth and water resistance.
Inhabits rivers and lakes in Europe and Western Asia. Builds complex lodges and dams, reshaping water systems. Active at twilight and night.

Best time is evening and early morning. Be careful — beavers are sensitive to sound and vibration. Hunting is strictly regulated, often fully prohibited.
Meat must be processed quickly in warm conditions. Hide is valuable, especially in winter. Castoreum may be used for medicinal purposes. Meat requires prolonged soaking and boiling. Used in traditional cuisine of some European peoples.

1. Soak meat in vinegar or milk for 2–3 hours.
2. Place with potatoes, onions, and spices in a baking dish.
3. Roast at 180°C (356°F) for about 1.5 hours.
