July: Hatching. Young grouse begin following their mothers, learning to survive in tundra conditions.

Poses no danger. Lives in Arctic tundra. In tundra regions, ptarmigan is prized as winter meat. Used as provisions for hunters or expeditions.
Inhabits shrub and moss tundra. Pure white in winter, mottled in summer. Usually found in pairs or small flocks.

Use winter camouflage — bird turns white. Best hunting times are early morning and evening. Tracks in snow often reveal location.
Feathers come off easily — pluck in the field. Cool carcass in snow in a bag. May freeze immediately after gutting. Meat is edible but rarely harvested due to remote habitat.
