July: Parental care. Young prairie dogs begin to explore the territory under the watch of their parents.

Poses no danger. Very cautious and timid animal. Used as food by prairie tribes, especially in winter. Hunting had ritual significance in some tribes.
Inhabits North American prairies. Lives in colonies with complex burrow systems. Diurnal, most active during dry sunny weather.

Live in colonies, camouflage is important. Entire colony may hide after first shot. Best time is morning and midday in clear weather.

Light meat soup with vegetables
1. Boil gutted carcass for 1–1.5 hours.
2. Add potatoes, carrots, onions, and spices.
3. Cook until done and serve hot.
Fried Prairie Dog with Onions (Pan-frying)
Requires marination
1. Marinate meat in spices and vinegar for 3–4 hours.
2. Fry with onions until golden brown.
3. Serve with side dish or bread.
